Chapter 30

In spite of my worries about Rushmore, the smell of barbeque at the Ultimate Island Party ignited my appetite.

The rum was flowing freely, people were dancing and limbo-ing and the noise level was almost impossible to bear. When the bongo drums started up, I was seriously regretting I hadn’t stayed in the cabin to watch TV.

“I used to be able to do the limbo in my younger days,” Flo said. “By the way, do you see Max or Courtney anywhere?”

I scanned the crowd and shook my head, doubting that Courtney would want to attend such a raucous party after having her jewelry stolen and her boyfriend bashed over the head. “By the way, have you heard from Larry?” I yelled.

“Yeah,” Flo yelled back. “He said to make sure I was having a good time. And that’s just what I intend to do,” she said. “Be right back.” Flo took off to join the limbo line and I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time I saw her she’d be practicing fire-eating. One thing about Flo, she was always ready to try something new.

Can’t knock it, I thought. At least someone was having a good time.

“Izzy?”

I spun around. “Courtney!” I gave her a hug. “I’m so happy you came.”

“I decided there was no sense locking myself up in my cabin. It won’t bring my jewelry back.”

“True. It’s insured, I hope.”

“Yes, but that’s not the point. It’s the sentimental value. My late husband bought me that necklace the weekend we got engaged. In fact, he bought most of my jewelry. I guess there’s no sense crying over spilt milk.” Courtney look around. “Where’s a waiter when you need one? I could use a drink right now, preferably the one with the cute little umbrella.”

The waiter came by with a Mai Tai for Courtney and two Lava Flows, one for me and one for Flo when she returned, if she ever returned. I glanced over at the crowd watching the limbo contest, trying catch a glimpse of Flo, hoping she wouldn’t end up pulling a muscle or straining her back. Which would be the perfect finale to this ill-fated cruise.

“Izzy,” Courtney took a sip of her Mai Tai, “how is Rushmore doing? Is he feeling any better?”

“Who knows?” I shook my head. “He’s still in sickbay and they won’t let me see him. I find it very frustrating.”

Courtney nodded and was about to take another sip, when instead she put the drink down. “Izzy, I’m at a loss what to do. I tried telling the officials Max had nothing to do with the theft, but I could tell they didn’t believe me. I wish Rushmore were here to conduct a real investigation.”

“Believe me, so do I.” I took a sip of my rum Lava Flow and tried to figure out how to find out what, if anything Courtney knew about Adele. I knew I had to tread carefully. “Courtney, do you have the feeling the investigators think Max might have known the thief?”

Courtney shrugged.
